Job Description
Korean Schools are very well organised, students are polite and want to learn, so teachers rarely face any discipline problems. Our Schools are located throughout Korea in all its main cities. Working hours vary from school to school, usually about 25 - 30 hours per week.
You have a choice as to whether you teach children or adults
Children's Schools
Most first time teachers in Korea, teach in children's language schools, as teaching experience is not required and children are easier to teach than adults. Children's schools generally have a split shift, but the hours are usually quite convenient, no very early starts and no late finishes. There are generally from 8-14 students per class and most institutes operate 50 minute lessons, so you could have six 50 minute classes per day. You cannot choose which age group of children you would like to teach, you must be open to all age groups that the school enrols, which are generally from 5-14 year olds. At present about 70% of children's schools operate on a 5 day week and 30% on a six day week.
Adults' Schools
Schools catering for adult students, (university students and business people), have a split shift, so you teach early in the morning and in the evening with the most of the day free. You will usually have the weekends free as most adult schools are based on a five day week. For teaching adults schools prefer to hire teachers with some teaching experience, as it can be a daunting experience facing a group of adults if you are not confident in your role as a teacher.
Salary and Benefits
Salary of 1.8 - 2 million won (€1500-1700) per month
Deductions from your salary for tax and pension contributions amount to about 7% of your gross salary. This salary allows you to save up to half of your monthly salary, as living costs are low and you will be getting free accommodation.
