The Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN) is a non-profit that has served the immigrant community on Long Island for four decades through legal services, community education and advocacy. CARECEN is looking for a dedicated, passionate, and experienced ESOL educator to fulfill the Substitute ESOL Teacher position. The Substitute ESOL Teacher position is a contract, part-time & as needed position.


Overview of the Role

The Substitute ESOL Teacher plays a key role on the Community Programs team, working closely with both ESOL staff and students. This position provides remote instruction for various levels of ESOL classes as needed. Depending on the program’s needs, classes may be scheduled in the morning, afternoon, or evening. The Substitute ESOL Teacher will coordinate with the ESOL Coordinator to provide coverage for regularly scheduled classes and will also lead one recurring two-hour class per week. On average, the Substitute ESOL Teacher will teach 6–8 hours per week.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality ESOL instruction for assigned courses, including lesson implementation based on ESOL Teacher’s instructions as well as utilizing web-based supplementary plans as needed

  • Maintain updated records of materials used and share these records with the ESOL Teacher and/or ESOL Coordinator

  • Maintain accurate records of student participation and in-class attendance and share these records with ESOL Teacher/Coordinator

  • Encourage students to utilize educational technology, in-house workshops, and public services available in their communities


Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, CELTA or equivalent TESL certificate required, or 2+ years experience in classroom instruction (online and/or in-person)

  • Familiarity with CEFR, NRS, or other measurements of language proficiency

  • Flexibility in scheduling to accommodate course offerings

  • Knowledge of Google Drive Suite, Zoom, and electronic ESOL resources, including use of educational cloud-based applications

  • Spanish fluency preferred


Highly Preferred

  • Educators licensed in bilingual/bicultural or multilingual/multicultural education

  • Certificate or experience teaching low-literacy, LEP, and/or adult education courses


Home Office: Remote


Hours: Flexible, as needed

Supervisor: ESOL Program Coordinator

Compensation: $25/hour
